Garbage Disposal Installation

Serving Maryland

Installing a garbage disposal can help to add an extra layer of functionality to your kitchen. It makes it much easier to rinse off dishes and get rid of food scraps since you won't have to worry about scraping them off into the garbage before putting dirty dishes into the sink. When choosing what type of garbage disposal to install, you may want to consider one with a lot of horsepower. Typical garbage disposals come in the 1/5 to 1/3 horsepower range, while more high-end models provide 3/4 to 1 horsepower. The higher the horsepower, the better the unit will be able to dispose of food scraps. It will also be able to handle tougher jobs, like meat and bones, due to the added power.

Garbage Disposal Installation in Maryland

The following are the steps that you would have to take in order to install a new garbage disposal. We usually recommend hiring one of our professionals to do the job instead of trying to take it on yourself in order to avoid installing your garbage disposal unit incorrectly.

  • Remove the drain lines - The first step requires you to identify where under the sink the garbage disposal unit will fit. The power will need to be turned off at the breaker. Once this is done, you'll need to remove the existing drain lines. The large nut located on the base of the sink flange will then have to be loosened and a strainer body will have to be pushed through the sink and removed.
  • Remove old putty - The putty around the sink opening will need to be carefully removed.
  • Remove the snap ring - The mounting screws on the mounting assembly will need to be loosened until the snap ring can be accessed. The snap ring will then need to be pried away from the sink flange. The parts of the mounting assembly will then have to be separated without damaging the fiber gasket.
  • Apply new putty - New putty will need to be applied around the sink opening before the fiber gasket and metal backup ring can be slipped over the sink flange.
  • Insert mounting ring and snap ring - The mounting ring will need to be slipped over the sink flange as the fiber gasket and backup ring are held in place. The mounting ring should be seated right against the backup ring. The snap ring will then need to be installed.
  • Prepare the garbage disposal unit - You'll need to knock out the plug and then access the electrical wires from the access hole of the unit. The wires will need to be connected and secured.
  • Mount the unit - Once the unit is prepared, you'll need to mount it. Once it's securely in place, the drain lines will need to be installed.

As you can see, this process is a bit complicated. To ensure it's installed properly and safely, have a professional do it. Contact us at Stang Plumbing & Heating for garbage disposal installation in Maryland today.
